Retatrutide: How to Get It Legally, and the Sellers Google Cites
Retatrutide is not approved. The legal routes are a Lilly trial or expanded access. On Oct 20, 2026, 36 of 113 Google AI answers cited peptide sellers.
Retatrutide, Eli Lilly's investigational drug, is not approved by any regulator in the world, and Lilly says it cannot be sold to consumers.1 As of October 25, 2026, the legal routes in the US are a Lilly clinical trial or Lilly's expanded access program for a narrow group of adults.23 The FDA says retatrutide cannot be compounded.4
How do you get retatrutide?
As of October 25, 2026, the two legal routes to retatrutide in the US both go through Eli Lilly. The first is a clinical trial: ClinicalTrials.gov listed two recruiting trials that give retatrutide, one of them Lilly's SYNERGY-Outcomes with US sites.2 The second is Lilly's expanded access program, for adults with a BMI of 35 or more despite the highest available dose of a weight medicine, two or more serious or life-threatening obesity-related complications, and no trial they can join.3
The table shows each route that people ask about, with what the sources say about it as of October 25, 2026.
Expanded access is a request that your doctor makes. These are the steps that Lilly and the FDA give:
- Your treating physician calls the Lilly Answers Center at 1-800-545-5979. Lilly tells patients and caregivers to go to their physician, not to contact Lilly directly.3
- Lilly says it answers within five business days after it receives the request and the medical information.5
- The physician, an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the company must all agree, and the FDA reviews whether the request may proceed.6
- Lilly says availability depends on geography, product supply and a detailed review of each patient's eligibility.3
The FDA says no law or policy requires a company to provide its investigational products outside of its clinical trials.6 If you want an approved medicine now, our retatrutide vs tirzepatide guide compares retatrutide with Lilly's approved drug.
Can you join a retatrutide clinical trial?
You can, if you meet the rules of a trial that is open, but few trials are open today. On October 25, 2026, ClinicalTrials.gov listed no retatrutide trial for obesity or type 2 diabetes that was recruiting in the United States; each such Lilly trial was completed or active but not recruiting.2 SYNERGY-Outcomes, a Lilly Phase 3 trial with a retatrutide arm, was recruiting adults with MASLD, a fatty liver disease, at 137 US sites in 34 states.7
SYNERGY-Outcomes enrolls adults with liver fat of 8% or more, an ELF score of 9 to 10.8 and a liver stiffness of 10 to under 20 kPa. It excludes people with a BMI under 25, type 1 diabetes or an HbA1c above 10%.7 The other recruiting trial, a Phase 2 obesity trial run by Hudson Biotech, has one site, in China.2
Lilly says clinical trials offer the safest and best way to get an investigational medicine before a regulator approves it.5 To check for new trials, search "retatrutide" on ClinicalTrials.gov and filter for the status "Recruiting". The doses tested in the trials are on our retatrutide dose page.
Is it legal to buy retatrutide online as a research peptide?
Buying retatrutide online as a "research peptide" is not a legal way to get the drug. On August 12, 2026, Lilly said that no regulator has approved retatrutide and that it cannot be sold to consumers.1 The FDA has warned companies that sold retatrutide falsely labeled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption" to consumers with dosing instructions. The FDA says these products are of unknown quality and may be harmful, and it urges consumers not to buy them.4
The FDA also says retatrutide cannot be used in compounding under federal law, and that it has not been found safe and effective for any condition.4 So a pharmacy cannot legally make it for you either.
Lilly has gone to court. On August 12, 2026, it said it filed six new lawsuits against US entities that sell black-market retatrutide, including compounding pharmacies, medical spas and online sellers that falsely claim their products are for research use only.1 Lilly also said it had reported more than 14,000 websites, ads, social media posts and product listings that unlawfully market retatrutide in over 100 countries.1 Our FDA warning letter tracker lists the FDA's letters to peptide sellers.
When will retatrutide be available with a prescription?
On August 12, 2026, Lilly said that no regulator in the world had approved retatrutide.1 On July 23, 2026, Lilly said it plans to submit retatrutide for U.S. approval in the first quarter of 2027, after it completes the Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls data package that a Biologics License Application needs.8 Lilly also says retatrutide is an investigational molecule that cannot be legally sold or marketed for human use.8
What does Google show when you search how to get retatrutide?
For the search "retatrutide how to get", Google's AI Overview of October 20, 2026, said: "The only safe and legal way to get retatrutide for human use is by enrolling in an official clinical trial." It cited 2 sites that a second review confirmed as peptide sellers.9 That day, 36 of 113 Google AI Overviews for retatrutide searches (31.9%) cited a confirmed seller, and up to 46 (40.7%) by all labels, in a glp1.health analysis.9
The 46 include 6 seller sites that blocked the second review.9 None of 40 AI Overviews for searches about tirzepatide, an approved drug, cited a seller.9
The text of these AI Overviews usually warned. 101 of the 113 (89.4%) said that retatrutide is not approved or is investigational.9 66 of the 113 (58.4%) used research-use wording such as "research use only" or "not for human consumption".9
The regular results showed sellers too. On October 20, 2026, 33 of 120 retatrutide searches (27.5%) showed a seller that a second review confirmed among the first-page organic results, and up to 76 (63.3%) by all our labels.9 For tirzepatide, the count was 0 confirmed, and up to 1 of 40 (2.5%) by all our labels.9
For "retatrutide how to get", the AI Overview of October 20, 2026, also told readers to look on ClinicalTrials.gov for trials marked "Recruiting" or "Enrolling by invitation", and it did not mention expanded access.9 On October 24, 2026, the same AI Overview cited 3 seller sites: 2 confirmed and 1 that blocked the review.9 On October 25, 2026, ClinicalTrials.gov listed no retatrutide trial for obesity or type 2 diabetes that was recruiting in the US.2
How we measured
We pulled one Google results page for each search through DataForSEO, for the US, in English, on desktop, on October 20, 2026. 113 of the 120 retatrutide searches showed an AI Overview.9 The 120 searches come from our keyword data and are not a random sample. The 40 searches about tirzepatide are the control.9
We gave each domain in the results a label from its own pages. A seller is a site that sells retatrutide or similar peptides itself. A second reviewer then opened all 73 peptide sites that the retatrutide AI Overviews cited.9 The review verified 64 of them: it confirmed 51 labels and changed 13. 9 sites blocked the review, 6 of them seller sites.9 The confirmed count leaves those 6 out. On October 24, 2026, we pulled 30 of the searches again.9
Before quoting these numbers
- "Cited" means that the site is among the AI Overview's source links. We did not measure clicks, visits or purchases.
- 36 of 113 is the confirmed count. Up to 46 of 113 counts 6 seller sites that blocked the second review.9
- Each number comes from one desktop pull per search, for the US, in English. AI Overviews change: 7 of the 30 searches pulled again on October 24, 2026, gave a different result.9
- Labels are per domain. A seller's domain counts as a seller even when the cited page is a blog post.
- We name no seller and link to none.
Earlier work
This analysis builds on earlier reporting. On September 12, 2026, Dad Strength Daily reported hidden peptide pages on the website of a North Carolina town that ranked on the first page of Google for peptide searches, a few of them cited in AI Overviews.10 On October 10, 2026, it reported that 23 of 93 "research use only" peptide stores it checked published mixing or dosing instructions, a dosing calculator or claims about what a compound does for people.11 On June 3, 2026, 404 Media reported that moderators of the r/biohackers forum said peptide and hormone replacement therapy companies were spamming it to get their posts into AI chatbot answers.12
